INFO RE: Grammar Test on Thursday Feb. 13, 2014

The grammar test tomorrow will consist of the following:

  1. Identify in a sentence:

  • linking verb, predicate noun
  • linking verb, predicate adjective
  • appositive
2. Write your own sentences using an appositive with correct punctuation (set off by commas or set off by dashes).

  • REMEMBER: An appositive is a second noun or a noun phrase renaming/specifying the first noun. Example:  Gone with the Wind, my favorite Civil War novel, is also a great movie.

  • An appositive is NOT a clause describing a noun in an adjective manner.
Such as:  Gone with the Wind, which is very long, is also a great movie.

In this case, that extra clause is behaving like an adjective, adding more information "adjective style," not "noun style".  You still set it off with commas, but it's not an appositive.
