1. Why was Matt taken to the hospital? How do you think his sickness impacted the change of the intended events that day?













2. Analyze the conversation between El Patron and Matt about treasures (page 183-185). What does this dragon allusion show us about El Patron?











3. Discuss what El Patron’s declining health foreshadows for Matt. Note the importance of Matt’s maturation (pp. 186-193).











4. Analyze the symbolism of the metaphor comparing Matt to a lamb and a ram (p. 187). Note the allusion to Jesus’ birth in a stable (p. 188) and look up the biblical reference of lambs and sacrifice in the Old Testament.  What do you think this means in terms of Matt’s intended purpose?













5. What are some of the causes for Matt’s desire to leave Opium?










6. What is the connection between Esperanza and Maria? How does Matt figure this out?










7. How is Celia involved in treating Matt’s illness? What do you this this may foreshadow? (198-199).
